Sponsorship by corporate underwriting, of select projects, provides the dedicated funds needed to achieve strategic goals related to the advancement of hair research and related educational programs.

Corporate leaders serve a vital role in enhancing the level of knowledge in the field of hair disorders. They also assist in the creation of new and needed resources that benefit the hair research field, the medical community, and patients with hair disorders.

AHRS Sponsorship History

The Beginning

The AHRS was founded in 1990. Until recently, our primary means of presenting information on hair growth has been two annual national meetings and one international meeting every three years.

In 2001, the AHRS sponsored the first of what we hope are many workshops on hair, this one being on cicatricial (scarring) alopecia. The findings of that meeting were subsequently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (Olsen E, Bergfeld W, Cotsarelis G, Price V, Shapiro J, Sinclair R, Solomon A, Sperling L, Stenn K, Whiting D: Summary of AHRS-sponsored workshop on cicatricial alopecia, Duke University Medical Center, February 10 and 11, 2001. J Am Acad Dermatol 48:103-110, 2003).

Out of this effort is a multicenter study initiated in 2004 on the causes of scarring hair loss in African American women. The AHRS has since developed several other new avenues for promoting research in hair. These include establishing grants for specific hair research projects and mentorships.

Supporting Research Projects

In 2003 and 2004, research grants were distributed. In 2003, we gave 6 mentorship grants. While 7 were awarded both in 2004 and 2005.

The 2005 mentorship grants are available online. These allow young physician-scientists to work closely for a limited period with someone who has expertise in an area of hair research or hair disorders that they wish to focus on in their future careers.

Bosley Inc. had kindly agreed to support the mentorship grants through 2006. However, the AHRS hair research grants do not have renewable funding in place. We are in need of support to advance research projects and put in place new website initiatives such as a registry of various rare or uncommon hair disorders. At AHRS, we believe communication is key to promoting a better understanding of hair disorders and their treatment.

The AHRS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that welcomes and needs your financial support. All donations are tax deductible. Contributions can be made in the name of a family member or friend. All contributors and their honorees will be listed on this website at the end of each year. Within broad categories, donations may also be designated for a particular area of hair research.
